So far Muhammad Wilkerson has been one of the top athletes playing at his position. The New York Jets defensive end has been a key member of a front line dubbed the “Sons of Anarchy” as he has the stats to prove it. They always say that if you’re great at something, you definitely shouldn’t do it for free. Selected in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft, Wilkerson was put in an interesting situation as far as his contract goes.
Due to the new collective bargaining agreement, Wilkerson is signed all the way through 2015 and there is no real reason for the Jets to give him an extension at this point in time. His cap numbers aren’t even that large to warrant a reworked contract, but ever since he put on a Jets uniform he has exceeded expectations tremendously. He’s a sack machine who can stop any rushing attack and tackles with aggression. On top of everything, Wilkerson is an active member of the community and has done all the right things on and off the field representing the Jets.
If the Jets want to send a great message to the entire team and of course the fanbase, they should absolutely get a new contract extension done with Wilkerson. He deserves a nice pay increase for a job well done these past few years as the Jets have more than enough salary cap room to afford it. It’ll show that hard work gets rewarded, and if others follow suit they can also reap the rewards by following his example.
It’s hard to think general manager John Idzik wants to put a high priority of Wilkerson’s contract this summer, but it would be a good thing to do to start the season on the right note. If it happens, keep an eye out for a late summer deal to get done right before the season opener. Either way, whether it gets done this year or at the end of the season, Wilkerson is in line to get taken care of when it comes to his contract and tenure with the Jets.
Wilkerson is certainly worth every penny the Jets are going to have to spend to make sure he’s in the Green & White for a long time coming so make sure to show your support by getting Jets tickets today!
