On every football team, there are certain players that go above and beyond what is asked from them by their coaches and teammates. Here are five players for the San Diego Chargers that are simply irreplaceable.

At the age of 34, Antonio Gates has given the city of San Diego and the Chargers everything he has to offer. The future Hall of Famer might not be able to put up the same numbers he did during his prime, but he brings veteran leadership to Ledarius Green and the rest of San Diego's offense.

In just one season, Keenan Allen showed us why he's so important to the San Diego Chargers. In Mike McCoy's new up-tempo offense, Philip Rivers' job is to get rid of the football as soon as possible. That means more crossing routes and less downfield bombs. Allen's ability to find holes in the defense and hook up with Rivers will be pivotal to the Chargers' success in 2014.

The newest addition to San Diego's secondary, Brandon Flowers, will make an immediate impact. The Chargers' pass defense just went from weak to potentially great thanks to this Pro-Bowler's talent. Playing alongside rookie CB Jason Verrett, Flowers adds skill and veteran leadership to a secondary that's thin and inexperienced.

2. Eric Weddle

As the Chargers' free safety, Eric Weddle is the eyes and voice of the Chargers' D. Consider him the quarterback of the defense -- aligning players and making pre-snap reads. Weddle isn't the highest paid safety in the league without good reason. Brandon Flowers even admitted to reporters that playing in San Diego's secondary with Weddle at safety is a huge reason why he signed with the Chargers.

The same argument could be made for just about every team in the NFL. The starting quarterback on any team is usually the most irreplaceable player, not only because of his skill, but the leadership he brings to a team. The San Diego Chargers will go as far as Philip Rivers will take them. Without Rivers, I can't see San Diego finishing anywhere besides last place in the AFC West.
