Wide receiver Eric Decker has lived up to the expectations that came with being the top free agent at his position this past offseason. So far, he’s embraced his new home with the New York Jets very well and is already making a nice impact in regards to helping those around him. Decker was brought in to help the Jets revitalize themselves at their wide receiving corps and finally be able to have viable threats on offense rather than always depend on their stellar defense to win football games.
Many believe Decker is vastly overrated, since the last few seasons, he’s been catching passes from future Hall of Famer, quarterback Peyton Manning. That’s not really the case, because he also thrived back when Tim Tebow was calling the shots with the Denver Broncos, so his talent proves he is a going to be a polarizing player with the Jets. He’s a great route runner, knows how to make big plays, and loves to catch touchdowns in the heat of the moment. He’s easily a major upgrade from what the Jets had last season at wide receiver, and will add a much-needed punch on offense.
The Jets have already held mandatory mini camps for their players, and Decker has already received rave reviews from coaches and players alike. Not just for looking sharp and executing plays on the field, but from his presence alone as a leader on the team, as he is already developing those around him. He’s been helping rookies like Jalen Saunders, Shaq Evans and Quincy Enunwa; he has also worked with trying to elevate struggling receivers like Stephen Hill, Jeremy Kerley and David Nelson, just to name a few. Who knows, maybe with Decker playing alongside him, someone like Hill can finally live up to his potential.
Of course only time will tell just how much of an impact Decker will have on the Jets once the regular season starts. That’s what matters most when it all comes down to it, as he should be on pace to have a very productive and successful season. Decker has been a very welcomed addition to the Jets’ locker room, as he’s very genuine and will do whatever is benefiting to the team. It’s truly rare these days to find an athlete with a down-to-earth and approachable attitude who’s willing to give more than receive.
There is a ton of potential for Decker to truly give a huge boost to the Jets’ offense, which has been vastly revamped to prepare for the upcoming season. If he can embrace the role of true leader both on and off the field, he will be a huge part of turning the team around into a playoff contender once again.
