The Buffalo Bills are on the cusp of a season with more expectations and optimism than any in recent memory. If the Bills are to become a playoff team, they need their best players to perform accordingly in 2014. These five players have the most to prove in the Bills’ upcoming season.

Although the Bills suffered through a disappointing season, they can take heart in knowing they found a gem in Alonso. He racked up a whopping 159 tackles to go along with four interceptions and two sacks. Now the pressure is on Alonso to follow that up with an equally impressive encore. The Bills can’t afford a sophomore slump from their star linebacker.

The Bills made one of the better free-agent signings this offseason when they plucked Spikes from their archrivals New England. Buffalo hopes that Spikes will be the run-stuffer the team has lacked in seasons past. Spikes has been chirping quite a bit about both his old team and his new team’s expectations. Hopefully his play can match his mouth.

Spiller entered last year as one of the league’s ‘breakout candidates’ who was supposed to have a huge season. Instead, he saw his yards-per-carry average drop from 6.0 to 4.6 and his TD total drop from 8 to 2. Spiller is certainly capable of bouncing back, as injuries played a part in his struggles. But the Bills need Spiller to be the game breaking threat they have only caught glimpses of.

Few rookie receivers in the past few years will be under as much pressure and scrutiny as Watkins will be in 2014. After the Bills mortgaged a considerable part of their future to acquire him, Watkins is expected to be a game-changing talent from day one. The Bills have revamped much of their offense, so Watkins is in a good position to succeed.

As the first quarterback selected in the 2013 draft, Manuel was under a great deal of pressure all year long -- even too much at times. Manuel was plagued by both injuries and a lack of talent around him. That isn’t the case this year. The Bills have surrounded their franchise QB with all the weapons he could hope for. Fair or not, the Bills’ fortunes rest squarely on Manuel’s shoulders.
