The Lions start training camp at the end of July, and while the team has addressed some of their issues during the voluntary and mandatory minicamps, some other issues still need to be addressed. It’ll be up to each to take what they’ve learned so far and keep it fresh in their mind for the start of training camp. Here are five storylines to follow during training camp for the Lions.
The Lions finished their minicamps with nothing resolved at kicker as Nate Freese and Giorgio Tavecchio both had their share of struggles. Freese, a seventh-round pick from Boston College, remains the favorite over Tavecchio, who went undrafted out of Cal in 2012, but the competition will likely continue through training camp and into the preseason.
Jason Jones only played in three games last year because of a serious knee injury. Now with his former defensive coordinator and coach gone in Jim Schwartz, his starting position is no guarantee. Youngsters like Devin Taylor and Larry Webster have plenty of promise, with Taylor having the better opportunity to start.
Even after signing Golden Tate this offseason and drafting Eric Ebron in the first round, the Lions need another receiver or two to step up and become a reliable target for Matthew Stafford. The battle for the slot receiver position is between Ryan Broyles, Kris Durham and Jeremy Ross. Broyles has been injury-prone, Durham has been inconsistent and Ross is more of a return specialist than a true wide receiver.
Each passing day that Ndamukong Suh doesn't have a contract extension should worry Lions fans. It's unclear at this point just how far along negotiations are between the Lions and Suh's agents.
With the departure of Chris Houston less than a month ago, the Lions addressed one concern about their defensive backs, but the rest of the unit is still a question mark. While it looks like Darius Slay will emerge as a starter, players like Rashean Mathis, Bill Bentley and rookie Nevin Lawson have concerns of their own that should still make Lions fans hesitant.
