Minnesota Vikings: 5 Players Who Might Be Playing Final Season

The NFL is a cutthroat industry. All players are expendable regardless of how productive they had been in the past. Since NFL contracts are not fully guaranteed, players can be released at the drop of a hat.

Here are five Minnesota Viking players who may be in their last season with the team for this reason or another.

Some still wonder why Charlie Johnson was even re-signed this offseason. He has been a weakness on an otherwise strong Vikings offensive line. With rookie David Yankey on his heels and no guaranteed money in his contract next season, 2014 may be his last year with the Vikings.

4. WR Jerome Simpson

The Vikings re-signed Jerome Simpson to a one-year contract after having a solid 2013 season. Given his off the field issues, the Vikings' young group of wide receivers and the fact that his contract is for only one season, he will have to prove his worth this season if he wishes to remain in Minnesota.

Chad Greenway has been a fixture in the Vikings' defense for many years now. However, he will be 32 years old at the beginning of the 2015 season and has already shown regression on the field. While Greenway is signed through the 2015 season, he could be released by the team if he does not produce at a relatively high level this season.

2. WR Greg Jennings

While Greg Jennings is only playing in the second year of his five-year contract, the remaining three years of his deal are not fully guaranteed. The Vikings will have to pay Jennings a base salary of .9 million in 2015 if the team chooses not to release him. That is an awful high amount of money for 800 receiving yards and four touchdowns.

This one may be the most difficult to stomach for Vikings fans. While Adrian Peterson has arguably been the most productive running back in Vikings history, he is being paid far too much money for a running back playing in a passing era. If the Vikings cannot restructure his contract, this may be the last season to watch No. 28 in purple and gold.
