5 Atlanta Falcons Players With The Most To Prove In 2014

The Atlanta Falcons were devastated by injuries in 2013, and finished with an abysmal 4-12 record. There is plenty of talent on the roster, but these five players seriously need to prove themselves in 2014 for the Falcons to return to their playoff ways.

Quarterback Matt Ryan had a decent season statistically in 2013 despite the Falcons terrible record, but he still took a good amount of criticism this offseason. Atlanta has had great success in the regular season since Ryan was drafted in 2008, but if he wants to prove doubters wrong, he must produce in the playoffs and lead the Falcons to a Super Bowl.

Safety Dwight Lowery has been a second-string player for most of his career with the Jets and the Jaguars, but will get an opportunity to start in the Falcons' secondary. Atlanta desperately needs him to prove himself as a ball-hawk against NFC South quarterbacks Drew Brees and Cam Newton if the Falcons want to succeed.

3. Julio Jones

There is no denying Julio Jones is one of the most productive WRs in the NFL when healthy, but 2013 was not kind to Julio on the injury front. Jones' season ended with a devastating foot injury in just week five, and if the Falcons have serious plans on contending in 2014 he must prove he is healthy and return to form.

2. Levine Toilolo

Tight end Levine Toilolo did not get many opportunities in his rookie campaign last season with future Hall-of-Famer Tony Gonzalez ahead of him on the depth-chart. Now that Gonzalez has retired, Toilolo is thrust into an incredibly important starting role in Atlanta's offense. They need him to prove he is an NFL starting tight end in 2014.

There is no question the Falcons were hoping for more production than they received from LB/DE Osi Umenyiora when they signed him prior to the 2013 season. He did have 7.5 sacks, but evidently has not proven his worth to Falcons coaches as he is currently a second-string LB on their depth chart. Osi needs to prove he can still be a starter in the NFL.
