The Jacksonville Jaguars have a few guys who really need to step up this 2014 season and prove themselves at a big-time level. The departure of Maurice Jones-Drew obviously has opened the door for Toby Gerhart; Cecil Shorts has a lot of pressure to become a bigger playmaker. There are opportunities all across the board for guys to step up.
The Jaguars drafted Denard Robinson a few years back not really knowing what exactly he'd be contributing to the offense -- they just knew he was a big play waiting to happen. Now he's added 15 pounds and has dedicated himself to the wide receiver position. This is the year they need to start seeing something out of Robinson.
Joeckel had his rookie campaign cut short by an ankle injury, but when he was out on the field, you knew the Jaguars had something special in him. Now that he's recovered and ready to go, it's time for him to prove he really can be that good at left tackle in the NFL.
Though the Jaguars' defensive line is going to be a good one this season, they're old -- and Chris Clemons is the oldest at 32. I don't think anyone is saying this is the year he starts falling off, but Clemons has to step in his first season in Jacksonville and prove to be the undisputed leader of the defensive line.
A lot of people are talking about how they can't wait to see what Cecil Shorts looks like when Blake Bortles is throwing him the ball. But the fact of the matter is that time is still a while down the road -- a whole season to be exact. He wasn't the healthiest last season, but it's important he steps back up this season and helps keep pace with the rest of a surging team.
After the departure of Maurice Jones-Drew, a gaping hole opened up at the running back position, and it wasn't going to be filled in the draft. So it was Toby Gerhart to the rescue. Gerhart has a lot of production to replace in the Jaguars' backfield during his first season; he's arguably the single most important player to this team.
