5 Reasons the New York Jets Will Win the AFC East in 2014

The New York Jets are known for making bold predictions. Rex Ryan almost always guarantees a Super Bowl victory before the season starts. I won't go that far, but I do think that the Jets have a good chance at winning the AFC East. This is something New York hasn't done since 2002. Here are my five reasons why the New York Jets will surprise many, and win the AFC East.

The Jets had the worst set of skill position players in the NFL last season. They addressed that issue in the offseason by signing Eric Decker and drafting Jace Amaro. This should help New York's offense become more explosive. At the very least, this will make defenses a little more worried when the Jets have the ball.

Chris Johnson became a victim of his own success in Tennessee. He was never able to come close to his 2,000-yard performance in his second year. Johnson still managed to run for over 1,000 yards in each season after his breakout year, though. Going to the Jets will allow Johnson to run behind a much better offensive line. New York has always been a good running team under Rex Ryan and I think Johnson will thrive in this system.

Geno Smith had the typical up and down rookie season. He had some bright spots last year, despite having no help from his surroundings. As stated earlier, that will no longer be the case. The offseason additions at the skill positions will help Smith become a more consistent player. I think year No. 2 will be a much better season for Geno Smith.

2. Weak Division

The AFC East isn't a very good division. Buffalo and Miami shouldn't scare anyone. The Jets will have a chance to pick up some easy wins against those two teams. The obvious hurdle is New England. No one has dethroned them as champs of the East since 2008. The Patriots have a lot of older players and injuries have been an issue in recent years. I think this might be the year Father Time catches up to New England.

New York would have made the playoffs last season if they even had an average offense. The defense carried the team all year long. The Jets have several good young defensive players who are only getting better. First-round pick Calvin Pryor will be a perfect fit at safety in Rex Ryan's defense. The defense will once again be the strength of this team, but this year, the improved offense will be enough to capture the AFC East.
