5 Reasons Why the Jets' Defense Will Be NFL's Best

One key aspect of an NFL team is finding its identity. In the years that Rex Ryan has been at the helm, the Jets have been known for defense. The Jets' style of play is different than many others, it is very complex and hard to figure out due to its crazy amount of schemes and blitz packages. Many are quick to write off the Jets because of their lack of offense in the 2013 season, but this year their defense can surprise all of the doubters.

Last season the Jets were ranked No. 31 when it came to takeaways on defense. In that same season the Jets were ranked eighth in yards allowed. Those two numbers don't match up. To be a complete defense the Jets need more takeaways. With the addition of Calvin Pryor and Dexter McDougle, I see the Jets with a lot more opportunities to create turnovers and help out their offense.

If I said to you name a top defense in the NFL, you would probably say a team like the Seattle Seahawks, San Francisco 49ers or Carolina Panthers. For the Jets, that is exactly what they want to hear. That type of response is why the Jets' defense has the ability to surprise a lot of people. The Jets will face top QBs Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and Peyton Manning this year, but the competition will rise the Jets' defense to the occasion.

When the Jets took safety Calvin Pryor in the first round of the 2013 NFL draft, they made a statement. With Pryor, the New York Jets told their fanbase that this defense can be elite. Pryor is a great addition to a depleted Jets secondary and if nothing else, the kid brings swagger on the defensive side of the ball. Pryor will make opposing receivers afraid to come across the middle and he will be an enforcer for years to come.

Sheldon Richardson, Muhammad Wilkerson and Damon Harrison are beasts on the defensive line. They are not on the level of the Jets' Sack Exchange defensive line from back in the day, but these three can ball. Last year, the big three combined for 150 tackles and 15 sacks. This year, the big three will anchor the defensive line once again.

Some hate him, some love him, but it's hard to knock his passion for the game. As long as Rex is having his say on the defensive side of the ball, the Jets' defense has an opportunity to shine. He is great at finding hidden gems on his team and giving them an opportunity to shine. Just ask Damon Harrison. Say what you want about Ryan, but without him the Jets wouldn't have the great defense that they have today.
