The Raiders' 5 Biggest Rumors Heading into Training Camp

On July 25, the Oakland Raiders kick off their 2014 training camp as they head into a season shrouded in uncertainty. They made significant upgrades to the roster this offseason via free agency and the 2014 NFL Draft, but still have a number of holes and weaknesses that seem too severe to overlook at this point. However, rumors are swirling about potential changes.

Here’s a look at the five biggest Raiders rumors heading into training camp.

5. Maurice Jones-Drew considered retirement before signing

Not long after the end of OTAs and minicamps, Jones-Drew admitted that he seriously contemplated retirement before deciding to sign with the Raiders. After emerging as a star early in his NFL career, Jones-Drew suffered from foot injuries that dropped him out of favor with the Jacksonville Jaguars last season. If he can’t get back on track in Oakland this year, don’t be surprised if MJD hangs it up.

According to recent reports, the Raiders are determined to be a more run-oriented offense in 2014. They struggled mightily with moving the ball on the ground last season, but should see a significant boost in success with a strong veteran duo of Jones-Drew and McFadden. Also look for sophomore Latavius Murray to make an impact after missing all of last season with an ankle injury.

3. Denarius Moore still on the trade block

Since a few weeks before the 2014 NFL Draft, Moore was rumored to be on the trading block. While the Raiders have yet to part ways with the inconsistent wide receiver, they are apparently still looking to find a trade partner. Moore is a talented pass-catcher with top-target ability, but uncomfortable amounts of inconsistency. Maybe a change of scenery would help him find some stability in his game.

2. Khalil Mack aiming for 2014 Defensive Rookie of the Year

Seen as one of the biggest steals of the 2014 NFL Draft considering his elite talent, Mack has already become a huge part of the Raiders’ defense heading into training camp. He’ll likely be their biggest playmaker this season, which has the rookie linebacker setting his sights on the 2014 Defensive Rookie of the Year award. It might be early to worry about that, but Mack has the talent to pull it off.

Following his latest run-in with the law, Josh Gordon is believed to be headed for the trading block as the Cleveland Browns attempt to get some sort of value out of him before he completely crashes and burns. The Raiders have been mentioned as one potential suitor. While he obviously won’t be able to help them in 2014, Gordon could be the No. 1 receiver they’ve needed for the last several years. Is the risk worth the reward?
