5 NFL Teams That Won't Return to the Playoffs in 2014

Every year in the NFL there appears to be a cycle of new teams that make the playoffs. This year shouldn’t be any different. These five teams just didn’t do enough in the offseason to improve their teams and make the playoffs in the upcoming season.

Last year under Chip Kelly the Eagles took the NFL by storm and managed to win one of the softest divisions in football. This year it could be a different story for them. Expect a bounce-back year for the Giants thanks to the addition of Ben McAdoo at offensive coordinator. Add that with the fact that one of the two Wild Card spots are going to go to ether the Seahawks or 49ers, and the road to the playoffs gets harder.

4. Cincinnati Bengals

Last year the Bengals made the playoffs thanks in part to an elite defense and a very good offense. Now that Mike Zimmer is gone expect that defense to take a step back just enough for either the Steelers or Ravens to take their place at the top of the division. With the defense taking a step back that means there is going to be more pressure placed on Andy Dalton to pick up the slack, and I don’t think he can do enough to win the division.

3. Kansas City Chiefs

Last year the Chiefs made a great run at the playoffs, going from the No. 1 overall pick to the playoffs. Andy Reid did a great job taking a team that underachieved two years ago and getting the most of out of them. But this year they are going to face a tougher schedule because of where they finished a year ago. and they won't surprise teams this time.

The Chargers didn’t necessarily get worse in the offseason; they are going to be a product of everybody getting better around them. Last year they managed to sneak into the playoffs as a No. 6 seed and they had a relatively easy schedule. This year they are going to have to play the NFC West, which should be a big enough factor that could prevent them from making the playoffs.

The Panthers made the playoffs last year on a strong running game and great defense, but they lost a lot of talent in the offseason along the offensive line. The loss of Jordan Gross and Geoff Hangartner to retirement is a big loss to their running game. Add that to a division that got stronger with the Saints and Falcons, and the Panthers just don’t have the talent to match up with them this year.
