Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli said that he likes what he’s seen from his defense this spring, which is obviously good news.
It’s good to hear because last year the Cowboys were dead last in total defense.
In order for the Cowboys defense to take the next step, here are five defenders that must step their game up in 2014.
In the last year of his rookie deal, Bruce Carter has a lot to prove. His career so far has been up-and-down for the most part. I can’t see him on this roster in 2015 without a great year.
The one-time highest graded defender in the 2012 NFL Draft, Morris Claiborne, has been a huge bust for the Cowboys so far. He lost the starting job to Orlando Scandrick, so if he can at least win that back, there might be some hope there.
Brandon Carr has been everything but what the Cowboys thought they were getting when they signed him as a free agent. If he doesn’t have a great season, I cannot see the Cowboys continuing to pay him in 2015.
Coming off of a season-ending injury in 2013, Henry Melton signed with the Cowboys as a free agent. Rod Marinelli’s defense relies heavily on the pressure coming from the 3-technique spot, so Melton undoubtedly has to bring his A-game, for the Cowboys to improve on defense.
As unfair as the comparison between DeMarcus Lawrence and DeMarcus Ware is, it is something that will be talked about for years to come, especially after what the Cowboys gave up to move up for Lawrence. So, he has to come in and impact games.
