Miami Dolphins Could Be Without C Mike Pouncey Longer Than Expected
The Miami Dolphins are expecting to be without their Pro Bowl center, Mike Pouncey, until October due to hip surgery, but the team could be without him for a much longer period of time after a report surfaced yesterday involving an alleged assault. In the report, a man claims that the Pouncey twins assaulted he and a woman early Saturday morning. According to the report, the Pouncey twins have yet to be officially tied to the allegations, but the investigation is still ongoing.
Pouncey has not been able to keep himself out of the media’s attention dating back to the “bully gate” saga involving Pouncey and former Miami players G Richie Incognito and T Jonathan Martin. Pouncey was tied to that report as one of the men involved in the alleged harassment of Martin and has now been involved in another case based around a very similar idea.
Pouncey has also been tied to the Aaron Hernandez trails due to a photograph which surfaced shortly after Hernandez’s imprisonment which showed the Pouncey twins wearing custom “Free Hernandez” hats.
Pouncey has been a bit of a problem child for Miami over the course of the past year and it does not seem to be getting any better, which is quite concerning as Miami truly thought it had its offensive line figured out after surrendering a league-high 58 sacks last season. Miami’s offensive line for 2014 was to be LT Branden Albert, LG Dallas Thomas or Billy Turner, Pouncey, RG Shelley Smith and RT Ja’Wuan James, but now the team must fill the void left by Pouncey until at least October and could be even longer than that if the alleged assault results in legal ramifications or a suspension handed down by the NFL.
Miami is in a difficult situation and is looking to fill Pouncey’s void with either Smith, the versatile Nate Garner, G Sam Brenner, UDFA Tyler Larsen or G Daryn Colledge.
If Pouncey is indeed suspended by the league and Miami must live without their best offensive lineman for a much longer period than just a month into the regular season, I would expect the team to either move Smith in to play center and allow Colledge and Turner to battle for the RG position or throw Larsen into the fire and let him learn on the fly.
Pouncey certainly needs to clean his act up quickly if he wishes to remain in Miami. If he does not, he could easily find himself out of a job and potentially out of the league within the matter of a few years.
