Playing in the shadow of arguably the league's two best teams, the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers, in the NFC West, has made the Arizona Cardinals one of the league's most underrated teams. Difficult division or not, the Cardinals are a legitimate playoff contender entering 2014. Here are five rumors surrounding the club as training camp rapidly approaches.

After using a fourth-round pick on him in May, the Cardinals were hoping to witness early signs that Logan Thomas can be starting quarterback Carson Palmer's successor. That hasn't happened yet. While Thomas showed off the impressive arm strength that made him worthy of being drafted, he continued to have accuracy issues during OTAs. It's obviously early, but Thomas must begin to correct those issues in training camp.

Tyrann Mathieu's injury, which is expected to sideline him for the first quarter of the season, has left a void at nickel corner. A dark horse to fill it is Justin Bethel, a third-year cornerback who has been a special-teams standout thus far. Bethel has drawn rave reviews from the coaching staff this offseason, positioning him for an opportunity to shoot up the depth chart.

3. Andre Ellington Primed for Breakout Season

Andre Ellington's promising rookie campaign, in which he averaged a ridiculous 5.5 yards per carry, has given him the starting job in Arizona heading into his sophomore season. After displaying more promise during the spring, Ellington appears primed for 20-plus carries per week, making him the Cardinals' biggest breakout candidate entering training camp.

2. Rob Housler Will Be Traded or Cut

Head coach Bruce Arians prefers tight ends that are more adept at blocking than receiving. That doesn't bode well for Rob Housler, an athletic pass catcher who isn't the most polished in-line blocker. Housler is reportedly buried on the depth chart by John Carlson, Jake Ballard and Troy Niklas, and will either be traded or cut during training camp.

Antonio Cromartie's final season with the Jets was a disaster. Hobbled by a hip injury, Cromartie surrendered the third-most yards in the entire league to assignments. That sharp fall off in reliability was only one year removed from a solid 2012, though, and a change of scenery in Arizona has reportedly done him well. Cromartie looked like his old self in OTAs, even running a 4.36 40-yard dash during a spring workout, according to this rumor.
