The situation involving the Minnesota Vikings, special teams coach Mike Priefer and former punter Chris Kluwe came to a head on Friday night. The team released a report regarding an independent investigation of alleged homophobic remarks by Priefer, while Kluwe ranted about it on Twitter.

It's shocking that Mike Zimmer retained Priefer when he was hired as head coach, but here are five reasons Priefer should be fired and not just suspended.

A protracted legal battle is not an ideal scenario for anyone involved, and it would put the Vikings in the headlines for the wrong reasons as a new season gets underway.

Training camp starts in less than a week, and Zimmer as well as other notables in the organization will surely have to dodge questions about Priefer and Kluwe. To say nothing of when, or if, Priefer himself is made available to the media.

Priefer steadfastly denied Kluwe's allegations immediately after they came out, and then reportedly lied to investigators about a specific comment Kluwe cited before eventually admitting he said what was alleged. Whether he's wishy-washy or simply a liar, Priefer's dishonesty is grounds for termination and that could come from the top of the organization soon.

Kluwe's NFL career is over after he was let go by the Oakland Raiders prior to last season, which helps explain the timing of the allegations he leveled against Priefer and the Vikings' organization via a Deadspin post in January. At this point Kluwe wants attention, for better or worse, and removing Priefer from his post would go a long way toward taking that away.
