Top 5 Things You Have To Love About Jay Cutler

Jay Cutler is easily the most polarizing player on the Chicago Bears, with many fans around the NFL loving him and many others finding him to be utterly unlikable. The former camp has it right; Cutler has a number of qualities that make it incredibly difficult not to appreciate him. Here are the top five things you have to love about the Bears' starting quarterback.

Cutler's arm talent gets talked about to death — as it should — but one aspect of his game that is often overlooked is his athleticism. Cutler is one of the league's more mobile quarterbacks, and this was on display during his first four seasons in Chicago in which he essentially operated without an offensive line. His escapability in the pocket is quite underrated and it makes for a fun player to watch even before the ball leaves his hand.

From an outsider's perspective, it's always interesting to see two professional athletes who obviously share a friendship just like you and your closest buddy. We often forget the human element inherent in sports, particularly in football. Brandon Marshall has noted how much Cutler has helped him in coping with borderline personality disorder while in Chicago.

3. Patience

As mentioned earlier, Cutler was a man on an island in his first four years in the Windy City; the offensive line was one of the league's worst year in and year out. Despite taking by far the worst punishment of any NFL QB during that span, Cutler never asked to leave town and go elsewhere. The Bears were laughably slow to fix their pass protection, but their quarterback stayed patient anyway. That is admirable.

2. Toughness

Being patient through a bad situation is one thing; toughing your way through it is quite another. Cutler took a flat-out silly amount of hits from 2009 to 2012 and he never complained. His willingness and readiness to keep standing in there and taking all the punishment makes it all the more ridiculous that some still label him "soft" for what happened in the 2010 NFC Championship Game even though it was a coaching decision.

Cutler's detached, somewhat cheeky attitude is one of the most endearing things about him. Sports fans get consumed by their expectation that every player fit the boring "good professional" stereotype, and they shower ire upon anyone who doesn't. Cutler and his personality make the NFL more fun. Fans need to take themselves less seriously.
