With 2014 NFL Training Camp already beginning for some NFL teams, the big storylines tend to be surrounding key positional battles. In the NFL, there is seldom a time that a position is more important than that of the quarterback. Here are the top 5 quarterback competitions going into 2014 NFL Training Camp.

5. Jason Campbell vs. A.J. McCarron – Cincinnati Bengals

Campbell and McCarron will be competing for the backup job behind Andy Dalton. McCarron has taken criticism his entire career for being a good player on a great team, which could motivate him moving forward. Campbell has been a disappointment for his entire NFL career and needs a boost. This QB battle will feature two players with two very different skill sets who most have written off.

4. Mike Glennon vs. Josh McCown – Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Glennon showed flashes of being a consistent NFL QB last season, but McCown could be the go-to guy after his season with Chicago and with management knowing that the offensive line needs work. All that matters is that Tampa Bay gets someone who can get the ball to Vincent Jackson and 2014 NFL Draft pick Mike Evans down the field.

3. Geno Smith vs. Michael Vick – New York Jets

Although the Jets’ management has repeatedly said that Geno Smith would be the starter and Michael Vick would be the veteran backup, Smith still has to prove himself. If Vick comes to training camp and shows out, New York would be idiotic not to give him the starting role. Tajh Boyd is technically in the picture, but he will likely end up as the third quarterback.

2. Matt Cassel vs. Teddy Bridgewater – Minnesota Vikings

Expected to be a top quarterback selection, Bridgewater fell on many draft boards after a disappointing season but still has the skills to be one of the biggest steals of the 2014 NFL Draft. Cassel is a veteran NFL quarterback who has had some success during his career, but he will likely be used as a mentor for Bridgewater until the rookie is ready to play. This quarterback battle is wide open, but Bridgewater has to step up and take it.

1. Johnny Manziel vs. Brian Hoyer – Cleveland Browns

Whether Hoyer being named starting QB going into training camp was an attempt to put Manziel in his place or not, this is hands down the most open quarterback battle in the NFL. Hoyer is a capable NFL quarterback, and until Manziel proves himself, the job is Hoyer’s to lose. Will it be Manziel or Hoyer joining LeBron James as the savior of Cleveland?
