With training camp opening up today, the Green Bay Packers are taking the first step to becoming champions in 2014. With so much to be excited about, fans can hardly contain themselves as the NFL regular season inches closer. Here’s a look at the 10 best reasons why Packers fans should be excited for the upcoming season.

The addition of Julius Peppers is huge for the Packers because it finally gives Clay Matthews a legitimate pass-rushing threat to work with. It’s hard when Matthews is the only player that strikes fear into an offensive line. However, Peppers’ presence along the defensive line will create all sorts of matchup problems for an opposing offense.

Speaking of Matthews, the elite pass rusher looks great in the first day of training camp. He’s healthy, full of speed, and ready to get his sack numbers back up to where they should be. If Matthews can avoid missing game time, he should do wonders for a Packers defense that needs him in order to succeed.

The pass rush for the Packers is something that fans definitely should be excited about. Green Bay ranked eighth in the NFL last season with 44.0 sacks. That number is expected to increase this year. The “Psycho” package will be a combination of linebackers Peppers, Matthews, Mike Neal, Nick Perry, A.J. Hawk, Brad Jones, with Mike Daniels or Datone Jones as the down lineman. The right personnel in 2014 should allow the package to flourish.

Jordy Nelson just signed a four-year, million extension, while Randall Cobb is expected to get extended too. The combination of these two talented wide receivers with the best quarterback in the NFL is a deadly one. Nelson is the most underrated wide receiver in the game, and Cobb’s potential is unlimited. These two have the ability to form the most dynamic wide receiver duo in football this season.

The drafting of Ha Ha Clinton-Dix is a huge step in the right direction. It shows that the Packers are serious about improving the play of the safety position, by far the team’s biggest area of weakness last season. The fact that Morgan Burnett simply had a down year in 2013 and has proven talent is reason enough to believe he will play better. On top of that, Micah Hyde is someone who could definitely excel at safety, which is encouraging.

Head coach Mike McCarthy has very high expectations for the team this year, which should excite fans. He believes “it’s a group we can do a lot of special things with,” and I couldn’t agree with him more. There is much talent and potential at every position on the team. If the Packers can stay healthy at core positions, there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be able to put together a magical run.

Eddie Lacy was the Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2013. The hope is that he can avoid a sophomore slump and take his game to the next level. Either way, fans are incredibly excited about watching him bulldoze linebackers and rack up the yards once again.

3. Return of Aaron Rodgers

Yes, Aaron Rodgers technically returned in Week 17 to defeat the Chicago Bears in thrilling fashion. However, the return of a healthy Rodgers who is able to suit up for an entire season is what has fans excited for 2014. He’s the best signal caller in the game. In fact, there might not be a more fun quarterback to watch play. With him under center, there’s no telling what the Packers could accomplish this season.

We got a decent taste of the Rodgers-Lacy combo in the first half of the season. However, the one-two punch of Rodgers and Lacy should take flight early in 2014. Lacy will keep defenses honest, which will allow Rodgers to shred the secondary though the air. Meanwhile, Rodgers’ stellar arm will force defenders to drop back, which will allow Lacy to torch defenses on the ground. It will be one of the most exciting things to watch for in 2014.

As thrilling as Rodgers and Lacy will be, the most exciting part about Green Bay’s upcoming season has to be the Super Bowl aspirations. The Packers will have one of the most talented teams in the NFL. If everything can fall into place as it did in 2010, Green Bay should be one of the few teams that will contend for a championship. There’s a long ways to go to get to that point, but there’s no denying that it’s a strong possibility.
