When Jordy Nelson had a career year in 2011, a lot of eyes opened around the NFL. His eyes, however, were staring directly at a lucrative contract extension, which he received today.
The Green Bay Packers have reportedly signed Nelson to a four-year extension averaging just under $10 million per season with a $14 million guarantee. With Nelson currently in the prime years of his career, this was a no-brainer for the Packers.
Last season, Nelson had more yards than ever before in his career without the benefit of quarterback Aaron Rodgers throwing to him for a huge chunk of the season. With the pair both healthy and happy heading into 2014, the Packers likely have invested in one of the premier receivers in the league with this extension. Considering how easily contract talks can turn into hold outs and other ugly business, this happening right now is great news for Nelson and the Packers franchise.
He now can relax knowing that his team believes in what he can do and can just focus on going out and doing his job. Though Nelson wasn’t as successful last season as he was during his breakout 2011 campaign, don’t be surprised at all if he gets back to form this year.
As far as the Packers are concerned, they have locked up an established receiver for what should be the best four seasons of his career. For Packers fans; who could ask for anything more?
