With Vernon Davis reporting for camp, let's take a step back and review some of the biggest moments in the tight end's career. It's easy to constantly be looking ahead for we can expect from players in the future, but sometimes it's nice to take a moment and reflect on the past. From a forceful head coach to a catch that is forever etched in 49ers lore, here are Davis' top five moments.
Davis reporting to camp and ending his holdout on Wednesday is likely one of the biggest moments of his career. The 49ers were one play away from being Super Bowl champions in 2011, and another play away from beating the Seattle Seahawks in 2012. The window for winning a championship doesn't stay open for long, so Davis putting aside his pride to focus on winning this season was huge.
After being a disappointment through his first three seasons in the NFL, the 2009 season was a coming out party for Davis. He led the league with 13 touchdowns and set career highs in receptions (78) and receiving yards (965). After a tumultuous start to a promising career, 2009 was the season that Davis finally started putting it all together.
Davis was a physical beast out of Maryland, which contributed to him being selected with the sixth overall pick. He ran an impressive 4.38 second 40-yard dash at the combine and had a broad jump of 10-feet-8, which was a foot more than the next tight end. At the time, the 49ers needed an offensive weapon to complement Alex Smith, their previous first round draft pick, and it has turned out to be a tremendous selection.
Say what you will about Mike Singletary as a coach, but he may be one of the biggest influences on Davis' career. After a blowout loss to the Seahawks early in the season in 2008, Singletary singled out Davis as being selfish and not a team player. This turned Davis' career entirely around, which started with the aforementioned Pro Bowl appearance.
Regardless of how many Super Bowls the 49ers win or do not win in the next few years, "The Catch III" will be remembered by 49ers fans for eternity. Davis had finally turned a corner in terms of becoming a dominant tight end from 2009 to 2011, and that was all capped off by a game winning touchdown that sparked the start of the 49ers success these past few years.
