Josh McCown has been rumored to be the front-runner for the starting QB job with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, despite a solid rookie season from QB Mike Glennon. McCown now has the opportunity to show that he can still play at solid level for an NFL team. Here are five reasons why McCown should start for Tampa Bay in 2014.

Glennon played well during his rookie season, but with a new head coach in Lovie Smith, there is no reason to hand the job over to Glennon as Smith has absolutely no ties to the second-year QB. McCown has an upper-leg on the youngster from NC State due to his experience in the league. McCown is a seasoned veteran, who has played for five different NFL teams and has been in the league for thirteen seasons.

McCown showed his ability to immediately step in and perform well last season for the Chicago Bears. All hope seemed to be lost when QB Jay Cutler missed time due to injury, but McCown was able to step in and play exceptionally well. His ability to gather his teammates and gain their respect quite quickly was one of the more heart-warming stories during the 2013 season.

McCown was able to step in and play well during his five starts for the Chicago Bears in 2013. He was able to lead the Bears to three victories during those five starts. During his eight total games played, he lead Chicago to a 3-5 record, but the team scored 26 points per game behind the McCown-lead offense. Of the five losses, much of the blame can be place on the defense for allowing an average of 37 points per game.

Lovie Smith has never really had a great NFL QB leading his team. He relies on an accurate game manager, who can step in and play well down-the-stretch if need be. McCown showed his ability to be just that in 2013 after putting together a marvelous season completing 149 of 224 passes (66.5 comp percent) for 1,829 yards and an astounding 13 touchdown to one interception ratio. McCown had a QB rating of 85.1 (out of 100).

In Chicago, McCown had an all-pro back in Matt Forte, two monstrous receivers in Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffrey, and huge tight end in Martellus Bennett. Tampa Bay did a phenomenal job this offseason of bringing in WR Mike Evans and TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins, both of which are 6-foot-5, to pair with another 6-foot-5 receiver in Vincent Jackson. Did I mention he has an all-pro back in Doug Martin coming off injury?
