Rex Ryan and the New York Jets coaching staff will be forced to make a critical decision regarding their Week 1 quarterback at some point during training camp. Ryan has two solid options to choose from in veteran Michael Vick and second-year quarterback Geno Smith.

While many expect Smith to be the Jets' starting quarterback to start the season, here are five reasons why Vick is the better option.

Vick had some unbelievable years while playing for the Atlanta Falcons, but his best season was in 2010 while playing for the Philadelphia Eagles. Conveniently, Marty Mornhinweg, Vick’s offensive coordinator in 2010, is now the offensive coordinator for the Jets. While Andy Reid deserves a lot of the credit, Mornhinweg did a nice job with Vick in Philadelphia and can do so again in New York.

Despite being 34 years old, Vick can still run like a gazelle. Geno Smith has above-average speed for a quarterback, but Vick is just in a different league altogether. Vick’s speed allows the Jets to do more things on offense and turns mistakes into touchdowns, and he is a nightmare for opposing teams to game plan for. Take a second to imagine the lethal combination of Vick and Chris Johnson in the New York backfield. Speed kills.

Vick has had some well-documented issues in the past, but his rehabilitation process has turned him into an excellent teammate and leader. He is the type of player that a team can rally around and trust in clutch situations. Vick commands respect on the practice field and in the huddle, making him the perfect leader for a Jets team trying to get back into the playoffs.

After an unexpected 8-8 record last season, the Jets are itching to make it back to the postseason. Vick has been to the playoffs four times in his career, twice with the Atlanta Falcons and twice with the Philadelphia Eagles. In fact, he made it all the way to the NFC Championship in 2004. Assuming the Jets can qualify for the playoffs, their AFC opposition likely would trot out a veteran quarterback, making Vick's playoff experience a benefit.

Geno Smith helped the Jets win quite a few games this past season, but he was also responsible for a number of losses as well. The Jets have an elite-caliber defense that will keep them in most football games if their quarterback does not turn the ball over. Vick offers more stability at the quarterback position and is slightly less turnover-prone than Smith. If the Jets are truly serious about winning in 2014, Vick is the man for the job.
