The San Diego Chargers went 9-7 in 2013, surprisingly cemented a wild card berth, and even won a road playoff game against the Cincinnati Bengals. The Chargers believes they will take another step forward in 2014, and the San Diego fans have these five reasons to be excited for the season.

The Chargers took 2013 first-team All-American cornerback Jason Verrett out of TCU with the 25th overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft. Had the team not signed Brandon Flowers in late June, Verrett would be starting as a rookie and has the talent to do so. However, being behind the veteran ball hawk on the depth chart should be beneficial as well. Verrett could be starting by mid-season if he picks up the system quickly.

Rivers had a career-high in completion percentage in 2013 (69.5%) and threw for 4,478 yards despite Keenan Allen not really making an impression until Week 4, which means the dynamic duo essentially accumulated 1,000 yards in 13 weeks. If Ladarius Green emerges as expected and Antonio Gates stays healthy (as does Allen), Rivers has a chance to reach the 5,000-yard mark for the first time in his career.

Linebacker Manti T'eo missed the first three games of the 2013 season to injury, but went on to have a respectable year despite carrying some controversy into his rookie campaign. T'eo had offseason foot surgery, but is expected to be ready for Week 1. And with his scandal now behind him, Chargers fans have reason to be excited that he could blossom into a solid stand-up presence in 2014.

The tight end position should be a strong suit for the Chargers in 2014 with a healthy Antonio Gates looking to prove he is still a top option, and the young Ladarius Green aiming to have his breakout NFL season. The team should place an emphasis on two-TE sets, and be a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses.

Allen won Rookie of the Year honors in 2013 with 71 receptions, 1046 yards and eight TDs, and built an undeniable rapport with Rivers. Opposing defenses will be challenged to guard the Chargers' tight ends over the middle, which will give Allen more opportunities for one-on-one coverage out wide. Barring an injury, Allen should accumulate over 1,110 yards and score 10 TDs during his sophomore campaign.
