The battle for the starting QB position for the Minnesota Vikings is probably the most intriguing of all. There are three quarterbacks all vying for that starting spot Week 1 at the St. Louis Rams, but which one will get it?
The first candidate is last season’s starter, Christian Ponder. He had a disappointing year, which will make it difficult to for Ponder to lock down the starting position, especially with two other QBs waiting in the wings. However, if he can impress during the preseason and training camp he could still find himself starting Week 1. All in all, it seems unlikely that he will get the nod to start.
Next is Matt Cassel. He may be 32 and heading into his 11th season in the NFL, but he is still potentially an invaluable asset to the Vikings team. Cassel proved last year he could still play, with 11 touchdowns in nine games. His experience makes him most people’s favorite to get the job, but there remains one more player fighting for the No.1 job.
That man is Teddy Bridgewater. Bridgewater was a first-round pick for the Vikings, and the rookie QB shows plenty of promise. He could be a starter for many teams, but in Minnesota he faces too much competition and it will take an extremely impressive training camp to get him the starting spot.
So who will take the Week 1 starting spot? In truth no one knows. In fact, I don’t think the Vikings’ coaching staff even knows yet. However, if I was able to choose I would definitely pick Cassel. His experience and skills could bring the Vikings to an 8-8 record this year from a 5-10-1 mark last year. While Bridgewater possesses a bright future for Minnesota, he isn’t ready for the top job just yet.
