5 New York Giants Players on Roster Bubble

The New York Giants have their first preseason game Sunday at the Hall of Fame game against the Buffalo Bills. Pretty soon they will then be making cuts to trim down their team to the final 53-man roster. Some positions are set in stone, making for easier decisions about who to cut. Here are five players on the roster bubble.

Herzlich has been a strong special teams performer for the Giants the past couple of seasons, but he may be cut because of the numbers game. The Giants have their starters in place with Jameel McClain, Jon Beason and Jacquian Williams. They also like fifth-round pick Devon Kennard and UDFA Dan Fox, and have Spencer Paysinger still on the roster as well. This will be one of the more difficult positions to crack a roster spot on the team.

4. CB Jayron Hosley

The Giants reloaded their defensive secondary this offseason, meaning roster spots will be hard to come by. Hosley is suspended the first four games of the season, which doesn’t help his cause either. Currently situated, Hosley will be the fifth string CB at best. The Giants may be better suited giving that spot to a different player such as Charles James or Bennett Jackson, who are playing for roster spots of their own.

3. QB Curtis Painter

The Giants do not normally carry three QBs on their roster, meaning Painter or Ryan Nassib will be cut. The Giants selected Nassib in the fourth round of the 2013 draft with the idea that he would be an heir apparent to Eli Manning. That plan does not look like it has changed, as the Giants seem intent on Nassib being Manning’s backup. With that still being the case, Painter will become a free agent sooner than later.

2. RB Michael Cox

Cox is facing an uphill battle to make the roster as the Giants added two running backs this offseason in Rashad Jennings and Andre Williams. Cox’s roster spot right now is tied directly to what happens to David Wilson. If Wilson is cleared to play football, Cox's roster spot is in real jeopardy. If Wilson is unable to return, Cox odds increase immensely to make the team. Becoming a special teams performer will help Cox make the final roster too.

1. WR Trindon Holliday

Holliday’s roster spot is in jeopardy because he is a specialist. Outside of kick and punt returns, Holliday offers very little. While he is good at what he does, it is hard to keep a player that does not offer much else. The Giants also have plenty of other options that are capable of handling return duties. If Holliday makes the team, he will have to blow the coaches away with his performance on special teams.
