With NFL training camps well underway and the first preseason games rapidly approaching, the attention is focused on roster bubble players. Every team has a good idea about who will compose the majority of their roster, as well as who definitely won’t be making the final roster. It is the middle class that is most intriguing at this time of the year, and with that in mind let’s look at five key players on the roster bubble for the New York Jets.

5. CB Ras-I Dowling

The Jets’ cornerback situation remains a bit iffy, but it appears that the top four spots are set. That leaves Ras-I Dowling in a competition with Darrin Walls, Ellis Lankster, and potentially a few other players for the final one or two spots. Dowling is a former second round who has dealt with a myriad of injuries but impressed in minicamp. With a strong preseason, Dowling could make the team and be a surprising contributor.

4. RB Daryl Richardson

Richardson has turned some heads since being signed off waivers, and he is making a strong push to earn a roster spot. It seems unlikely that he could beat out Bilal Powell, but the Jets might decide to keep four running backs, which would affect the depth at another position. Richardson probably deserves to make the team on merit, but the numbers may not be in his favor.

3, QB Tajh Boyd

Most thought that Boyd would beat out Matt Simms after the Jets drafted him in the sixth round, but he has struggled to adapt thus far. Obviously there is still plenty of time for Boyd to prove himself worthy of a roster spot, but the competition between him and Simms will be very close. It is unlikely the Jets will carry four quarterbacks, so this one will come down to the wire.

2. WR Shaq Evans

This could just as easily be Jalen Saunders, as neither rookie wideout has dazzled thus far. When combined with the strong play of Stephen Hill and Jacoby Ford, it appears Evans and Saunders will not have it easy despite being fourth round picks. The most likely scenario is that the Jets will carry at least six receivers, but there may not be enough room for everyone. Look for this competition to play out deep into the preseason.

1. OLB Antwan Barnes

Barnes was thought to be a safe bet for the roster until the Jets signed Jason Babin to be their situational pass rush specialist. With Barnes still recovering from a torn ACL and the presence of young options like Trevor Reilly and Troy Davis and veterans Garrett McIntyre and Jermaine Cunningham, Barnes could end up being forced out. Things could go either way for Barnes, but if his injury lingers he could struggle to make the cut.
