The New England Patriots are well into their second week of practices, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. There is as much nervous energy and tension surrounding Foxboro, Ma. as there is excitement. For some players, there is a serious chance that they won’t be suiting up for the Patriots in Week 1. Here are five Pats veterans who are currently on the roster bubble.

5. Josh Boyce

The addition of Brandon LaFell over the offseason was bad news for Boyce, who now faces an uphill battle to make the roster. With LaFell, Julian Edelman, Aaron Dobson and Matthew Slater slated for four of the six receiver spots on the depth chart, Danny Amendola, Kenbrell Thompkins and Boyce will battle for the final two. Thompkins has had an excellent offseason, and Amendola is a more proven player than Boyce.

4. Brandon Bolden

With the emergence of James White in training camp, Bolden now finds himself at the bottom of the Pats’ backfield. To make matters worse, fascinating undrafted rookie Roy Finch is hot on his tail for a roster spot. To put it simply, Bolden has very little room for error in the month of August.

3. Joe Vellano

Vellano was the poster boy for the Patriots’ struggles against the run in 2013, as he had to take on the undesirable job of filling in for Vince Wilfork. Now, he must compete with first-round draft pick Dominique Easley and Chris Jones for the backup roles on the interior of the defensive line, a tall order to say the least.

Chandler Jones, Rob Ninkovich and Will Smith are guarantees to make the team at the defensive end position. Buchanan could sneak in as a depth player, but it will be tough to beat out Jake Bequette, who has been having a great training camp thus far.

A second-round pick of the Patriots back in 2009, Chung is a difficult player to figure out. While he excels against the run, Chung was one of the worst pass-defending safeties in the NFL last season as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles. His best bet to make the team could be in the form of punter Ryan Allen’s personal protector.
