As the Oakland Raiders look to rebuild their once powerhouse franchise, they have opened up competitions all over the field. There is a nice mix of veterans competing with young guys which should bring out the best in all of them. With competition comes surprising cuts. Here is a look at five players who are on the roster bubble for the Raiders for 2014.
Butler has occasionally flashed big-time potential during his blossoming career with the Raiders. With four established receivers ahead of him, Butler is competing with Greg Little for a roster spot. Whoever has the better preseason and brings more to the table as a special teamer is likely to stick.
Little is a talented former second-round draft pick who hasn’t been able to put it all together during his brief NFL career. He is competing with Brice Butler for the fifth and likely final, wide receiver roster spot for 2014. Little is a bit of a wild card, but if things click for him, he could play his way into a significant role. If not, he could be a cut-down day casualty.
The Raiders have cornerbacks Taiwan Jones, Carlos Rodgers, Tarell Brown, D.J. Hayden and Keith McGill who are virtual locks to make the team. Casey will have to beat out Chimdi Checkwa and T.J. Carrie, both of whom are coaching staff favorites, to earn a roster spot.
Darren McFadden and Maurice Jones-Drew are going to make the 53-man roster. The Raiders’ coaching staff is high on second-year pro Latavius Murray as well. Sheets signed a contract that guarantees very little and will have to play well in the preseason to convince the Raiders that they should keep four running backs in 2014.
David Ausberry and Mychal Rivera are the Raiders' top two tight ends and locks to make the active roster. Kasa, who has missed a significant amount of training camp with an injury, is competing with Brian Leonhardt to fill the role of blocking tight end. Leonhardt has the chance to jump ahead in the competition with Kasa out.
