The Buffalo Bills began their preseason last night with a 17-13 loss to the New York Giants in the Hall-of-Fame Game. With players finally seeing real game action, the ensuing roster cuts will begin to shape the team’s 53-man roster. Here are five players who are fighting for their lives to make the cut.

An undrafted rookie out of Miami, Gaines was looking like he would have a tough time making the roster. However, unforeseen circumstances have given him a shot. Kiko Alonso’s season-ending injury opened up one spot permanently. Then, Alonso’s possible replacement, Nigel Bradham, received a one-game suspension. This only leaves his spot open for that one game, but Gaines could take advantage.

4. DT Corbin Bryant

After appearing in just one game in his first two seasons, Bryant played in all but one game last year, starting in a pair. Unfortunately for Bryant, the Bills are very talented along the defensive line, with Pro Bowlers Mario Williams, Kyle Williams and Marcell Dareus. They also have solid depth with guys like Jerry Hughes, Alan Branch and Manny Lawson. Dareus’ possible suspension may open up a spot, but Bryant shouldn’t expect to see much time.

3. TE Chris Gragg

Gragg was selected by the Bills in the seventh round in last year’s draft. In nine games, Gragg caught five passes for 53 yards and one touchdown. The Bills have had injury problems at tight end during training camp. Both Scott Chandler and Tony Moeaki remain on the bench, as Lee Smith started in the Hall-of-Fame Game. If both Chandler and Moeaki remain hurt, Gragg should make the roster. If not, he may find himself on the outside looking in.

After starting in 15 games in his first two seasons, Hairston missed all of 2013 due to a mysterious illness. Like most of Buffalo’s offensive line, Hairston has not looked great in training camp. Hairston has seen time at both left tackle and right guard. But with rookies Seantrel Henderson and Cyril Richardson playing better than expected, Hairston may not be able to find a spot on the roster.

The Bills selected Graham in the third round of the 2012 draft hoping he would emerge as the deep threat the team has lacked. But Graham has not performed to expectations thus far, as through two seasons he has just 54 catches for 683 yards and three touchdowns. The additions of Sammy Watkins and Mike Williams make it unlikely that Graham will make the 53-man roster now that the Bills finally have quality depth at wide receiver.
