Expectations Are Too High For New Orleans Saints’ Jairus Byrd
The biggest signing for the New Orleans Saints this offseason was superstar safety Jairus Byrd. Even though he’s coming off back surgery, Saints fans are expecting big things from their man. However, it’s possible that the lofty aims set by fans could be way too high for the recovering star.
There’s no questioning Byrd’s ability. He’s easily one of the best safeties in the league, and the Saints desperately needed more firepower in their secondary. That said, it’s difficult for anyone to get into a groove after missing much of the offseason routines, more so if complications from the injury continue to bother him during the season. He has the talent to meet the expectations, but fans might be wanting too much from a guy coming off a surgery.
Granted, the procedure on his back was a relatively minor one, and there aren’t any issues that are expected to arise. However, it’s one of those things that is impossible to be sure of. If he’s able to get into a stride with the rest of the team early and no problems come up, it wouldn’t be shocking for him to dominate. That said, it’ll be hard for him to get into a rhythm.
Even if Byrd isn’t the dominant force that fans expect, he’s still going to be more than capable of leading the secondary and providing solid play. This may not be the year that Byrd blows away Saints Nation, but he will definitely perform in the next couple of seasons.
