We got a nice look at the New York Jets’ progress in the team’s first preseason game tonight and there are telltale signs of who’s going to be a clutch player this season and who’s not. Time to make some big predictions.
What the Folk! He proved that he earned that contract extension when he nailed a 51-yard field goal in the first half of the game. And it’s great to know that he’s got a fantastic protégée in rookie K Andrew Furney, who gave the team the lead with one minute to go in the fourth quarter.
McDougle made some solid plays during the preseason game, including batting down a throw from Colts third string QB Chandler Harnish. CB Dimitri Patterson was on the sideline more than I expected to see and CB Kyle Wilson missed too many tackles.
The kid can’t catch and now the he’s got some serious competition. WR Eric Decker is super clutch and WR David Nelson is a great target as well. It seems like Hill simply won’t be able to close the gap and make the necessary progress.
Mark my words, he will be the go-to slot receiver for the QB, just like TE Dustin Keller was for QB Mark Sanchez. But what’s better is that he’s got some speed. Keller only had one gear, but Amaro can turn on the jets once he’s caught the ball.
Based on this performance, I think Vick’s the man. He has a better grasp of the offense and adds a speed dimension that the Jets will need to keep the defense off balance. His ability to escape the pressure will extend the play longer when the pocket starts to collapse. His experience is also invaluable. It's tough, but I think he may squeeze pass QB Geno Smith in the race for starter.
