Although the stats from his NFL preseason debut might not blow anyone away, Johnny Manziel was extremely solid. For his first time out, he showed the ability to scramble and run around like we all know he can. Yes, he did it against some NFL guys as well. His passing numbers were decent for only 11 attempts. What can you say? Manziel was solid in his debut. Is anyone surprised?
Any and all questions about this kid do not surround his ability on the football field and never have. Sure he is a little bit smaller than some quarterbacks but so is Drew Brees. The two shouldn’t be compared of course, but the point is height has little to do with it. The guys in college were tall too, just not all as fast as the defenses Manziel will see in the NFL.
As far as stats go, Manziel went 7 for 11 passing with 63 yards and rushed for 27 yards with a long of 16 on a 3rd down with 8 yards to go. That was a scramble that we all expect to see a ton of one day when the chains are taken off of him. This is not surprising stuff people. Manziel is good at playing football and he showed that once again tonight.
The best news of all was probably that he was able to run well and his arm was lively to say the least. There will be those who question him and when he makes mistakes there will be folks all over him. When the cleats meet the field though, Manziel is going to be a very good quarterback in the NFL, like it or not.
Tonight, Manziel showed not only his ability but also a little patience and good awareness. Get ready Cleveland Browns fans, because the show is about to begin. Manziel gets to start in the second preseason game. Set your DVR and make sure you don’t miss what he does with the starters. It is sure to be must-see football at its finest. Manziel being must see TV; that may be the least surprising thing of all.
