New Orleans Saints Far From Perfect In Preseason Win

Though the New Orleans Saints managed to pull out a win in their opening preseason contest against the St. Louis Rams, they had plenty of miscues that need to be remedied before the regular season begins. This Saints’ team has been called one of the best ever assembled, but they still need some polishing before they meet those lofty expectations.

Penalties killed them. It’s difficult (closer to impossible) to win football games when you continuously shoot yourselves in the foot. They amassed 10 penalties which, to put plainly, is just something that good football teams don’t do. If the Saints are going to have any success this year, they have to play with more discipline.

The Saints also managed to turn the ball over a couple times but, when you’re dealing with second, third and fourth-string quarterbacks, interceptions tend to happen. They also allowed an easy touchdown pass, missed an extra point, and allowed the Rams to execute a fake punt. These are things that just can’t happen if a team is going to make a run at winning it all.

There were bright spots for the Saints. The running backs are off to a great start, rookie Brandin Cooks put on a show and Ryan Griffin is making strides as he tries to win the backup QB job. This is the first preseason game of the year, so it’s expected that everything won’t go to plan. They still have players waiting to come back from injury too, so this isn’t the best that fans will see this year. Now, they just have to work on refining their game.
