Things are heating up in New England Patriots training camp as preseason rolls on. The Pats play the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday, and for some players, the game couldn’t be more important. Check out five Patriots players who are currently on the roster bubble.
When the Patriots acquired Brandon LaFell over the offseason, it spelled trouble for Josh Boyce. But now that Brian Tyms has emerged as a legitimate threat to make the roster, Boyce is seriously on the bubble. It’s hard to imagine the talented but largely unproven receiver making the team without a few eye-opening performances in preseason games this month.
After dropping undrafted rookies Asa Watson and Justin Jones and adding veterans Ben Hartsock and Steve Maneri this week, it’s clear that the Patriots are still tinkering with the tight end position. That means nothing is guaranteed for D.J. Williams, who has only nine career receptions to his name.
Anyone who saw Malcolm Butler’s performance last week against the Washington Redskins knows that the undrafted rookie has a shot to make the team. Since the Patriots already have such a crowded cornerback group, that puts Kyle Arrington on alert. Butler looked every bit the part — if he keeps up the good work, Arrington’s tenure in New England could be over.
Steve Beauharnais was considered to be a pretty sure bet to make the roster before training camp, but Darius Fleming has been turning heads since the calendar turned to August. He isn’t under as much fire as some of the other players on this list, but Beauharnais definitely has to play his best football this month to fend off Fleming and make the team.
Just because Patrick Chung started his career with the Patriots, doesn’t mean he’ll pick up where he left off. After ranking as one of the worst pass-defending safeties in the NFL last season, Chung will have a hard time holding off youngsters Kanorris Davis and Jemea Thomas as the month goes on.
