5 Takeaways From Denver Broncos' First Preseason Game

The Denver Broncos began their preseason with a Super Bowl rematch with the Seattle Seahawks. While the game did not have much importance due to the fact that the second team played the majority of the game, the Broncos did a lot of things correctly and ended up winning the game 21-16.

Here are my five takeaways from the Broncos' first preseason game.

The Broncos focused a lot on the passing game in 2013. It is never a good idea to be a one-dimensional team on offense. Even though the team lost Knowshon Moreno to free agency and Montee Ball did not play, Ronnie Hillman, Juwan Thompson and Kapri Bibbs looked good during the game. If they can continue to improve, this could be a great unit in 2014.

In the game there were a total of 25 penalties. The Broncos were responsible for 12 of them. Although there was one call that I was confused about as to why the flag was thrown, penalties set a team back or help the opponent. The defense can be aggressive, but they need to make sure they can be aggressive without drawing the flag.

When Peyton Manning hangs up the cleats, it is most likely that Brock Osweiler will take over as the starting quarterback. I am sure fans liked what they saw from him against the Seahawks. He recovered from an interception to lead the team down for the game-winning touchdown. He will be a player to watch this preseason. From what we have saw, he could have a promising career.

2. Juwan Thompson Could Impact The Final Roster

Even though he was not impressed with his debut, there is no doubting that the UDFA running back had quite the showing last Thursday. Adding on to his success in training camp, he could make some decisions difficult for the coaching staff when it comes to the final roster. There is no doubt, however, that if he continues at this rate he will be on the final roster.

In the first few series that the first team defense was on the field for the Broncos, they looked great. I believe they finally found the players to put pressure on the quarterback. It's also worth mentioning that Von Miller and Chris Harris did not play. Once these two players get back onto the field, I have no doubt this team will look great on every aspect of defense. I believe this unit will be exciting to watch this season.
