5 St. Louis Rams Players To Watch in NFL Preseason Week 2

With plenty of youth on their roster at present, the St. Louis Rams still have a great deal of work to do prior to the regular season getting underway. This collective inexperience brings an abundance of optimism to the franchise for the first time in a long time, and the squad’s continued progression under Jeff Fisher also has fans dreaming big in 2014. Here are five guys to keep an eye on during the preseason’s second week.

Alright, so technically this is more than one player, but when there are three guys like Zac Stacy, Benny Cunningham and rookie Tre Mason gunning for reps, everyone deserves to be on the watch list. Stacy resides atop the depth chart with Cunningham still owning the No. 2 spot despite Mason garnering a lot of preseason fervor. Look for the competition to heat up even more in the second exhibition outing.

So I did it again with multiple players, but I promise this is the last one. Kenny Britt is touting this as a special group of receivers, with Tavon Austin, Brian Quick, Austin Pettis and Chris Givens getting the majority of the work. Stedman Bailey has also gotten some looks with his involvement likely to see an increase in this contest. Determining just how these guys all stack up come Week 1 will be huge for the direction of the offense.

3. Michael Sam

There wasn’t much to talk about from Michael Sam’s first game, and he still has quite the uphill climb to make the 53-man roster. The overall depth of the defensive line doesn’t work in Sam’s favor with studs like Chris Long and Robert Quinn holding the starting spots on lockdown and contributing pieces such as Eugene Sims and William Hayes behind them. He needs more than a QB hurry to get the staff’s attention in the preseason’s second week.

2. Sam Bradford

This will be the preseason debut of the fully recovered ACL on QB Sam Bradford, and the entire Rams fanbase must be holding their collective breath. It’s put up or shut up time for the former No. 1 pick, and there’s a great deal riding on this season with his massive rookie contract still weighing down the salary cap. Seeing how he responds in the heat of battle fresh off a major injury will be big to this team’s 2014 forecast.

With a team-high six tackles in the preseason opener, EJ Gaines became the other famous Missouri draft choice for the Rams this past spring. Michael Sam may be getting all the press, but Gaines has a chance to make the roster as a reserve corner in a crew of young DBs. If he can back up his impressive showing from last week’s game, the Rams could have themselves a real gem in this unheralded stud.
