The New Orleans Saints' first preseason game against the St. Louis Rams was filled with many realizations, not all of them good. The Saints got the win, but they have to be more interested in the individuals that shined in the opening exhibition match. Here are five of the most intriguing things from the first game.
It was expected that Ingram would see a much heavier workload after the departure of Darren Sproles, but many people were concerned about whether or not he would perform well. But Ingram was dominant while he was on the field, so fans should feel much better about him taking starting reps.
One of the most interesting stories out of training camp has been the incredible performance of the rookie receiver. He started out slowly against the Rams, but he managed to turn on the jets for a big score. Cooks is certainly setting a high standard for his play.
Hill won't have too many chances to make a statement this season (Jimmy Graham and Benjamin Watson are going to dominate the tight end position), but he'll take advantage of his opportunities. He proved that he is a threat, and the Saints would be foolish not to use him in some way.
No Saints fan wants to think about life after Drew Brees, but the former practice squad quarterback has been turning heads. He dominated in the Black and Gold scrimmage and played well under pressure against the Rams. It would be very surprising for him not to be named the backup, and, if he keeps improving, he could take the reigns one day.
This Saints team has been heralded as one of the best in history, but they left a lot to be desired in the first preseason game. They weren't as sharp as fans expected them to be, but, then again, this is the preseason. As long as they get everything shaped up in the next few weeks, they should be fine.
