As August continues to grow into its teens, the competition is getting progressively stiffer in New England Patriots training camp. The Philadelphia Eagles have been in town this week, and joint practices have been intense. Here are the top five Patriots to watch in this preseason contest.

5. Dominique Easley

Monday marked Dominique Easley’s first NFL practice after receiving an ACL injury. Expect the Patriots to use Easley early and often if he suits up against the Eagles, as they try to figure out how best to use the first-round pick in their defense. If the Florida product shows a good burst and makes some plays, he could make an immediate impact come September.

Like Easley, this was Aaron Dobson’s first week of practice, but it’s unclear if he’s going to play against the Eagles. Dobson is in a great position to have a breakout year, as Julian Edelman, Rob Gronkowski and Brandon LaFell will be drawing the majority of opposing defenses’ attention. It would be great to see a glimpse of this if Dobson plays on Friday.

3. Alfonzo Dennard

Here’s yet another Patriot who made his 2014 debut this week. Alfonzo Dennard hasn’t gotten much attention because of the acquisitions of Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner, and the emergence of Malcolm Butler in training camp, but he could be primed for a big season. It will be interesting to see if the missed time will have an affect on him.

The undrafted rookie is stealing headlines in what seemed to be one of the most difficult positions to break into on the Pats’ roster. Veteran Kyle Arrington is in serious danger of losing his spot on the team — if Malcolm Butler continues to stand out this month, the rookie will win the job.

The Patriots have been experimenting with a 3-4 defensive scheme as of late, and Chandler Jones has assumed the role of outside linebacker. It would be very interesting to see how Jones performs in that role in an actual game, so hopefully defensive coordinator Matt Patricia breaks out that formation Friday.
