10 New England Patriots Players Who Impressed In Preseason Week 2

10 New England Patriots Players Who Impressed In Preseason Week 2

The New England Patriots rebounded nicely in Week 2 after a dismal performance in their preseason opener. Many players stepped up, and these 10 guys in particular really stood out.

Brian Tyms has been the talk of the preseason for the Patriots. Going from virtually unknown to a standout player in less than a month. He continued his excellent play in preseason Week 2, hauling in three passes for 29 yards and a touchdown. He has a shot to make the 53-man roster if he can keep it up.

Duron Harmon is locked in a battle with Patrick Chung for the Patriots' starting job at the SS position this season. On Friday night, he certainly didn't hurt his chances, registering two tackles, one pass deflection and an interception. He still hasn't won the job, but that may change if he continues to impress in the final games of the preseason.

Kenbrell Thompkins is part of a logjam at the WR position for the Patriots this season. He may not even have a secured roster spot on the team, but in Week 2 of the preseason, he tried his best to convince the coaching staff that he is worth keeping. He caught 3-of-4 passes for 32 yards and a touchdown in the game.

CB Malcolm Butler is another guy who has emerged seemingly out of nowhere for the Patriots. He has had a very strong camp, and that trend continued into Week 2 of the preseason. He registered seven tackles and forced a fumble in the third quarter of the game. With his solid play, he may very well have opened up a roster spot for himself.

No surprise here, but Tom Brady looked to be in midseason form on Friday night. He completed 8-of-10 passes for 81 yards with a touchdown and an interception. The interception he threw was a pick six, but it was a miscue solely on TE Steve Maneri, who ran a poor route. Brady played very well, but something tells me the Patriots' coaching staff wasn't too happy about him attempting to make tackles on defense, particularly in the preseason.

RB Jonas Gray had a standout game for the Patriots in Week 2. He rushed for 98 yards on 12 carries, a YPC average of 8.16. He almost added a rushing touchdown to his stat line as well, but it was called back thanks to an illegal push in the back by Josh Boyce on a defender.

LB Steve Beauharnais had a standout preseason game for the second straight week on Friday night. He had nine total tackles, the most on the team. He also leads the team in total preseason tackles with 18. If he wasn't buried on the Patriots' depth chart, his preseason numbers would be more significant. For now though, he is little more than a special teams contributor.

Roy Finch redeemed himself in a big way on Friday night from his rough Week 1 performance. After coughing the ball up in his debut, finch showed his versatility in Week 2, shining in the return game as a receiver out of the backfield and as a runner. He carried the ball seven times for 37 yards and a touchdown. He also added two catches for 34 yards and two kick returns for 52 yards.

One of the biggest surprises of the preseason for the Patriots, Garoppolo continued his solid preseason play on Friday night. Although he only completed 6-of-12 passes in the game, he threw for 72 yards and two touchdowns without an interception. He also played against better competition than the previous week. Garoppolo has a chance to be Tom Brady's backup if he keeps it up and Ryan Mallett is dealt.

Ryan Mallett showed a lot of improvement from his Week 1 preseason performance. He completed 7-of-11 passes for 92 yards and a touchdown, while adding four rushes for nine yards and a touchdown. Mallett's days in New England may be numbered, but he might have done a great deal for his trade value on Friday night. He remains a guy to watch for the remainder of the preseason.
