With half of the preseason in the books, things are starting to come into focus in New England Patriots training camp. For some veterans, these are some of the more nervy August days they’ve encountered in their lives. Here are five Patriots players that are on the roster bubble entering the third week of preseason.

Boyce is feeling the squeeze recently because of the emergence of unheralded second-year wideout Brian Tyms. The fact that Boyce hasn’t exactly stood out in the two preseason games doesn’t help his chances either.

Mallett had better hope that the Patriots carry three quarterbacks, because at this point, it appears that Jimmy Garoppolo has surpassed him on the depth chart. Mallett played much better against the Eagles than he did against the Redskins, but Garoppolo has looked more the part of a capable backup.

3. Brandon Bolden

With Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen, and James White all guaranteed roster spots, Bolden must fight for the fourth and likely final piece of real estate in the Patriots’ backfield with Jonas Gray and Roy Finch. While Bolden did rip off a nice 18-yeard rush on Friday, both Gray and Finch showed promise and could give the veteran a run for his money.

2. Tavon Wilson

In two NFL seasons, Wilson hasn’t really lived up to his second round draft status. While that could definitely change in the all-important third year, it’s possible that Wilson won’t even make the team with Duron Harmon, Patrick Chung, and Devin McCourty entrenched in the depth chart at safety, and Nate Ebner, Kanorris Davis, and Jemea Thomas not far behind.

1. Will Smith

While Smith is a reputable player after having played 10 NFL seasons, nothing is guaranteed for him this month. Michael Buchanon and rookie Zach Moore have been playing very well this preseason -- the Patriots may decide to go with youth for defensive end depth.
