Jacksonville Jaguars Preseason 2014: 5 Takeaways from Week 2 Loss

The Jacksonville Jaguars may have lost to the Chicago Bears Thursday night, but there were still plenty of positives to come out of the game. Blake Bortles remains the team's obvious storyline, but there is much more to this young team. With that said, here are five takeaways from the Jaguars' loss to the Bears.

Rookie quarterback Blake Bortles was impressive for the second consecutive week. He continues to look poised and comfortable in the offense. This week, the first-round pick will face another test when he is expected to finally take first-team reps in Friday's game against Detroit.

The Jaguars' plan since drafting Bortles back in May was to have him sit behind veteran Chad Henne, and that still appears to be the case. Although, if Bortles keeps playing like he has the past two weeks, the Jaguars may have no choice but to insert him into the lineup at some point this season.

3. The Jaguars Need Cecil Shorts III and Allen Robinson

The Jaguars' first-team offense scored 13 points on four possessions, but was twice forced to settle for field goals when a touchdown didn't seem out of the question. The offense needs another big, reliable target other than Marcedes Lewis to throw to in the red zone. That is where Cecil Shorts III and rookie Allen Robinson come in. Shorts was back at practice Sunday, and Robinson should be back in time for the regular season.

2. Center Competition Remains Unresolved

Jaguars center Mike Brewster improved upon his disastrous performance against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but questions still remain. Rookie Brandon Linder has played his way into the mix and will likely start at either right guard or center. If Linder starts at guard, then Brewster would start at center, and if Linder starts at center, then Jacques McClendon would start at guard. Neither situation seems ideal.

It is not just the center position that is a concern for the Jaguars' offensive line. An injury to starting right tackle Austin Pasztor leaves another gaping hole on the line. Pasztor will likely miss the first two weeks of the regular season, with Cam Bradfield starting in his absence. Needless to say, the Jaguars' offensive line is far from a finished product.
