Geno Smith Should Be Named Starting QB For New York Jets
This quarterback competition featuring Geno Smith and Michael Vick needs to finally end once and for all. Call it what you’d like, but the New York Jets need to stop even calling this a “competition” and just come out with the announcement that Smith will be their starting quarterback for the 2014 season.
During the offseason, the Jets toyed with the idea of having an open competition between both quarterbacks, yet it favored Smith from the beginning. He got more reps, more plays specifically created for him, and was merely going along with this competition storyline during interviews even though he knew it was his job to lose.
Vick also understands the entire situation and he handled it very well, so the Jets need to clearly identify the roles each quarterback will have and start focusing on the regular season.
Smith had a very good offseason as he has shown good consistency throughout training camps and preseason football. He’s playing smarter, throwing more accurately and most importantly, he’s not making any rushed decisions on the field. At the rate he is going, he won’t turn over the football as much as he did last year, and that speaks volumes of his progression as a quarterback.
While Smith hasn’t been great, he is undeniably ahead of Vick as far as the depth chart is concerned and has earned the starting spot at quarterback. He deserves this opportunity to prove his critics wrong and start working his way to being a top quarterback in the NFL.
Who knows, with the commitment the Jets plan to have this season with running the football, Smith might even have an incredible season that is ahead of even his own expectations.
