The New York Jets head into Week 3 of the preseason with open competitions, injuries and a lot of players who need a big game in order to stay on the roster. Here are five Jets who need to prove their spot on the roster in Week 3.

It's not like No. 3 quarterback Matt Simms is setting the world on fire with his play, but Tajh Boyd hasn't been as advertised early on in training camp and the preseason. He looks like a rookie who isn't ready for a big time role in the NFL any time soon. In camp it has been said that he's thrown about six interceptions so far, which doesn't help his cause. Boyd is a high-character guy, so it's easy to get behind him and hope that he plays well.

The ex-New England Patriot was praised for his play during training camp, but he has yet to translate it to the field because he's been injured. The knock on Ras-I Dowling during his time with the Patriots was his inability to stay on the field and guess what? He's hurt again. It's hard to make the roster if you can't prove yourself on the field; it's a shame because the Jets are desperate at corner and he has a great opportunity in front of him.

3. Greg Salas

Greg Salas is said to be one of the two reliable receivers in camp along with David Nelson. He's not big or very strong, but he is quick and works well in open space. The reason why he is on the bubble is because the Jets have a lot of depth at wide receiver and there's still a lot of uncertainty of who is going to make the team. If Salas has a big game in Week 3, he is sure to find a way on the roster.

2. Clyde Gates

Clyde Gates, along with Salas, is one of the WRs who may be fighting for one of the last two spots on the roster. With injuries to Shaq Evans and Jalen Saunders, it's possible that both Gates and Salas make the roster, but they both haven't earned their spot just yet. Gates has experience with the Jets, but he has been fighting the injury bug as well. Gates had a nice game in Week 2 and the Jets love his speed so he's got a shot to make the team.

Jeremiah George, the fifth-round pick from Iowa State, may be on the brink of losing his spot to the emerging DE/LB IK Enemkpali. If the preseason ended today, I would say that George would not make the team, but he still has time to prove himself. Enemkpali has a forced fumble and a blocked punt to his name so far in the preseason, and George needs to make up some ground very soon.
