The Jacksonville Jaguars will take on the Detroit Lions Friday in the all-important third preseason game. This game is usually about getting a long look at the starters, but role players will be hoping for their chance to prove their worth. With that in mind, here are five players who are on the roster bubble.

Rookie Blake Bortles has progressed more rapidly than expected and will likely start the season as the team's backup quarterback. Bortles' impressive play may alleviate the need for the Jaguars to keep three quarterbacks on the active roster, which impacts Ricky Stanzi.

Fourth-year linebacker J.T. Thomas was one of the Jaguars' best special teams players last season and was a solid backup linebacker. Unfortunately, injuries slowed Thomas in training camp and opened the door for Nate Stupar and Telvin Smith to emerge. Thomas will need to perform well against the Lions on Friday to leapfrog someone on the depth chart.

Undrafted rookie Josh Wells has outperformed journeyman tackle Sam Young in the preseason thus far. However, injuries to Wells and starting right tackle Austin Pasztor has left the door open for Young to prove he belongs on the final 53-man roster. Friday's game against Detroit is a big opportunity for Young.

After performing well early in training camp, safety Sherrod Martin appears to have an uphill battle to make the final roster. Josh Evans has played well in the preseason and Chris Prosinski has not looked half bad on special teams. Martin will need a solid showing in Detroit to get back in the hunt for one of the backup safety jobs.

Third-year center Mike Brewster has been the starter in each of the team's two preseason games, but that could change on Friday. Jacques McClendon has been taking the first-team reps at center in practice all week, and rookie Brandon Linder has played well at both guard and center, which could make Brewster expendable. Brewster will need to play much better if he hopes to hang on to his roster spot.
