After being selected in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft, Ryan Nassib was looked at as a developmental pick by the New York Giants. It was thought by many that the Giants would groom him to be Eli Manning’s backup and replacement in the future, as they liked him enough to trade up and get him in the draft. Nassib’s roster spot looked to be in danger throughout the spring and summer as Curtis Painter put some heat on him for backup QB duties, but Nassib put that battle to rest with his performance Friday night.
After being demoted for last week’s game against the Indianapolis Colts to third team, Nassib led a game-winning drive to keep the Giants’ perfect preseason intact. The performance moved him back up the depth chart for Friday night’s game against the New York Jets, and once again he made the most of it.
After a Michael Vick fumble, the Giants were set up nicely at the Jets’ 16 yard line. Nassib came in to replace Manning, but was still facing many of the Jets first team defense. He was not fazed, as he put the team into the end zone with a three yard pass to fullback Henry Hynoski.
Nassib continued working well against the Jets backups, as he connected with Preston Parker for a 39 yard touchdown pass. Nassib found a match up he liked and took advantage, placing he ball perfectly as Parker was able to bring it in for a score even with defensive pass interference being called on the play.
When the Jets offense responded with another score of their own, Nassib once again put the Giants’ offense in gear, leading a nine-play, 75 yard drive to give the Giants a 28-24 lead. For good measure, he added a third touchdown late in the fourth quarter on a 31-yard pass to Corey Washington.
On the night, Nassib finished with a strong stat line, completing eight of 12 passes for 103 yards and three touchdowns.
While the Giants first team offense once again struggled outside of their two-minute drill to end the first half, the backups continued their strong play behind the performance of Nassib. He not only performed on the field, but did it under some adversity as his roster spot was thought to be in real jeopardy as Painter surpassed him on the depth chart. But after his performance against the Jets, Nassib should have the backup quarterback duties all wrapped up.
