Week 3 of the preseason is known as the most important game until the regular season. It is looked at as a dress rehearsal for the regular season for all NFL teams. As far as the Patriots are concerned, they passed their first real test of 2014 with flying colors. They impressed on both sides of the ball. Five players in particular really stood out with their excellent play. Read on to find out who they were.

Ordinarily, a kicker wouldn't be on this list, especially given the fact that the Patriots have a ton of playmakers on both sides of the ball. However, Stephen Gostkowski had an incredible game on Friday night. He converted all three of his field goals on the night, including a 60-yard attempt right before halftime. He converted all of his extra points on the nights as well.

Picking up right where he left off last season, WR Julian Edelman had a great game in preseason Week 3. He caught all eight of his targets for a total of 99 yards on the night. He also had two punt returns in the game for 51 yards, a 25.5 yard average. Edelman is one of the few WRs on the Patriots with a clear role and roster spot heading into the season.

RB Shane Vereen showed his versatility as a dual threat in Week 3. He caught five passes for 57 yards and two touchdowns. He also added six rushes for 18 yards in the game. If he can stay healthy, he has a chance to contribute in a major way this season. He can be a threat both on the ground and through the air, especially if Stevan Ridley continues to have fumbling issues.

DE Chandler Jones was an absolute nightmare for the Carolina Panthers on Friday night. Not only did he have two sacks in the game, but he also registered an additional tackle for loss, giving him three in total. He led the team in tackles in the game as well with six. With an improved secondary, Jones could have a career year and a major spike in production in 2014.

QB Tom Brady continued to show why he is one of, if not the best, QB in the NFL on Friday night. Against an elite Carolina Panthers defense with many of the starters playing, Brady was sensational. He completed 17-of-21 passes (a completion percentage of almost 81 percent) for 204 yards and two touchdowns. He also didn't turn the ball over in the game. He may be coming off a down year, but he should bounce back if his receivers can stay healthy.
