5 Games That Will Define the Houston Texans' 2014 Season

The Houston Texans stumbled to a painful 2-14 record in 2013, but the drafting of Jadeveon Clowney in May makes the team relevant this season. However, even with the two-headed pass-rushing monster of Clowney and J.J. Watt, the Texans will have a tough go of it in 2014. Here are the five games that will define the Texans’ 2014 season.

When coming off of a 2-14 record, the opening game is crucial. The Texans lucked out during scheduling by getting paired with the Redskins, who were almost as bad as the Texans last season, finishing 3-13. This is a great opportunity for the Texans to get into the win column and put some early pressure on the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC South.

It’s not insane to think that the Texans could start the season 2-0. The Raiders have done their usual offseason work of acquiring over-the-hill veterans, and their quarterback situation is as murky as ever. If the Texans aren’t victorious in this game, it would hurt their confidence in a major way.

3. Week 6 vs. Indianapolis Colts

Obviously the Colts are supposed to win this game, but if the Texans are at least able to keep up with Andrew Luck & Co. on the scoreboard, that would be a big plus. One thing is for sure: The Colts’ offensive line will have their hands full with Clowney and Watt barreling in on Luck from the ends.

Of the three AFC South teams that don’t have a horseshoe as their logo, the Titans appear to be the strongest heading into 2014. However, this looks like a trap game from the Titans’ point of view, as the Texans really aren’t that far behind them on the AFC power ladder.

Without a doubt, this game will be a test for the Texans’ defense considering the speed of the Eagles’ attack. Any form of a positive result for the Texans in this game, even if they don’t win, would serve as momentum heading into their Week 10 bye. Look for the Texans to challenge their former linebacker, Connor Barwin, throughout the game.
