The San Francisco 49ers beat the San Diego Chargers 21-7 on Sunday night. The game was heavily controlled by the 49ers, whose run offense really showed up to play, in conjunction with the defense who kept the Chargers from making long gains. Here are five takeaways from the game.

Both the starting and backup defensive backs showed great discipline on Sunday, keeping the Chargers from completing many long passes. While Philip Rivers went 9-of-10, and gained 85 yards, Brad Sorensen, who played most of the game, was completely locked down, throwing 11-of-21 with two picks.

Rookie running backs Carlos Hyde and Glenn Winston rushed for a combined 96 yards on Sunday. Few are surprised by the fact that Hyde, the 2nd rounder out of Ohio State, has been successful so far, but undrafted Winston is a welcome producer for the offense. He rushed for 58 yards on eight attempts and had a 27 yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

The defensive line and linebacker squads showed a great edge against the Chargers. The defense was able to keep San Diego to just 254 total yards, and were able to prevent 10-of-14 third down conversions. The front seven on defense in particular showed disciplined play, missing few tackles and allowing very few running plays for major yards.

Third round pick from Wisconsin, Chris Borland made six total tackles and a sack in Sunday's win. He is emerging as a great young talent for the team who is contributing with great tackles against running backs near the line of scrimmage and showing some promise pass rushing.

Colin Kaepernick does not seem to be in sync with his offense. He completed 6-of-12 for under 60 yards in the game, and seemed to panic more than usual. He hasn't played nearly as well in this preseason as he has in the past. He is still essential to the 49ers' success, but he will have to get his groove back before the season starts.
