In their final preseason game, the Oakland Raiders will play host to an old AFC West rival in the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday. The Raiders will also welcome their former quarterback, Terrelle Pryor, in his first game back in Oakland since being traded away from the team this offseason. Even better, Pryor will likely be on the field a lot during this game, as most of the starters will only play one series – if at all. Pryor will look to impress the coaches of the Seahawks and other teams, as it is widely thought that Seattle may not have room on their roster to keep him. In other words, it will be the “Terrelle Pryor Show” when the two teams hit the field tomorrow night.
Pryor won’t be the only quarterback to watch, however. Another player to watch closely is the Raiders’ rookie Derek Carr. He’s currently in a battle with veteran Matt Schaub for the starting job; though, Schaub is dealing with some tenditinis in his elbow and has been unimpressive in the preseason. That means Carr will receive the bulk of the first-team snaps on Thursday, and if he impresses it will be interesting to see if the coaches hand him the reigns this early in his career. Carr will look to get a struggling Oakland passing game going. He will have a tough task in facing Seattle’s secondary, considered the best and one of the deepest in the league. But Carr was one of the top passers in college football last year at Fresno State, so the rookie could surprise some people.
This game is also the last opportunity for the “bubble” players to show they are worth keeping on the final 53-man roster. The first round of cuts were already made, and more are coming immediately following the final preseason game. The good news for some of the young players that don’t make the roster is that the NFL now allows 10 players to be designated to the practice squad instead of eight. That means players like fullback Kiero Small of the Seahawks and receiver Seth Roberts of the Raiders will have an opportunity to develop this year and hopefully continue their career. They will be two of the players to watch in this game as they hope to accomplish their NFL dreams.
